I am Ubik. Before the universe was, I am. I made the suns. I made the worlds. I create the lives and the places they inhabit; I move them here, I put them there. They go as I say, they do as I tell them. I am the word and my name is never spoken, the name which no-one knows. I am called Ubik but that is not my name. I am. I shall always be.
Another day, another song. This is true. The song we wrote today was an idea Nathan had for a while, one that we never got around to trying. It's in the vein of "In The Empire" - sort of, much more progressed than that though. It has no title yet, just like the other new song we played last at the ICA. Its fucking great to be writing new songs again, I must say. Not sure where this one is going to end up though, it doesn't really suit where we though we were heading. Not going to rule anything out.....ever.
This is my video idea for a song from our album called "We Have This Place Surrounded". The ideas behind this concept is to take the general idea and themes of the song and push them as far as you can.
Song Intro
“Exits man”, in this case a well dressed business man, packs up his desk and leaves his day job excited that he has completed another efficient day at his boring job.
First Verse
Almost as soon as he exits the building he is followed by Nathan, dressed in a straight jacket and shackles around his ankles (so he walks funny), appearing almost from nowhere singing the song to “Exits man”. The idea is that Nathan is a figment of Exits man’s imagination. This scene cuts between close ups and wider-angle shots of Exits man walking on the pavement. In the wide-angle shots 'Exits Man' is on one side of the screen and Nathan slides in and out of the frame. The camera focus would change accordingly. Nathan appears in all but one wide angled shot, but is in the frame at the end of the first verse.
First Chorus
Exits man turns around and Nathan is not there. The shot then cuts to a wide-angle shot from side on and Nathan is on televisions in the front window of a TV shop. This only occurs for the duration of this shot. Exits man turns around and Nathan is in front of Exits man singing the chorus. Exits man walks around Nathan, thinking no more than that he is being annoyed by a weirdo. He then goes into his “usual café” to get a coffee.
Second Verse
Exits man is in a café on his own drinking coffee. An outside camera shot of Exits man in the window could start this off. The camera is on him looking down at his coffee during the line “You doubting what I see”. The camera then cuts to Nathan opposite him singing the next line “For a fraud is all you are to me”. Exits man then runs out of the café. The camera would then cut to Nathan. He looks over in the direction of a young boy. The camera then cuts to the young boy, staring in his direction, sitting next to his mother whilst she is deep in conversation with a friend. The camera would then cut to an upwards shot of Nathan in the window of the café but instead of Nathan o very old man is in a straightjacket.
Second Chorus
Exits man has left the café and is walking in a daze. He walks along the pavement across the screen from left to right, and Nathan is in the background propped up against a building singing. A front on shot then sees Nathan appear behind Exits man and exits man turns around and punches Nathan. The punch goes straight through. Exits man keeps walking and Nathan is still following. He turns around again and punches Nathan again, this time connecting. Nathan does not flinch but Exits man ends up with a bruise on his face.
As soon as the singing ends and the instrumental section starts, the Exits man runs away. The camera can then shows Nathan in the background of certain wide angle shots of Exits man running. This would indicate no-escape.
Middle Eight Section
However hard he tries, Exits man cannot escape Nathan, or the subject matter and intent of the lyrics. Exits man finally ends up in a dead end alley. He is facing the dead-end and turns around to leave when he sees Nathan blocking his exit. Nathan sings the middle 8 section to him as Exits man breaks down even further. While this is happening, the doctors from a sanitarium pull up. They arrive in an ambulance. Exits man is relieved that they have come to take Nathan away, the doctors then start moving toward Exits man.
Final Chorus
During the last “you wanted love” section, the camera would then pan out and Exits man is the one in the straightjacket and Nathan is dressed in the same suit Exits man was previously wearing. Nathan is singing the outro chorus to Exits man as he is being taken away kicking and screaming, looking and pointing to Nathan as if the doctors are wrong. Exits man then looks back and the old man from the café is in the suit.
Hello all, welcome to my TryNewUbik blog. What the fuck does TryNewUbik mean? It doesn't matter, although if you want to find out and get to the bottom of it, I promise you won't be dissappointed. So what is this all about? I don't actually know myself. I have made this site as private as I possibly can (for a blog) so as few people as possible can search for it successfully, so if you've found it welcome! I'm just going to talk about...........stuff.
